Abstract

The effect of water extract from perilla seeds (Perilla frutescens var. japonica) on macrophage stimulating activity was studied both in vitro and in vivo. In measuring the amounts of nitrite, TNF-¥á, and IL-l¥á produced from macrophage cell line J774Al in vitro, defatted perilla water extract (DPWE) showed the highest macrophage stimulating activity among three kinds of extracts; perilla water extract (PWE), perilla methanol extract (PME), and DPWE. As a result of the macrophage stimulating activity in vivo using macrophage cells prepared from ICR mice, TNF-¥á, and IL-l¥á producing activity of the 0.5% DPWE dietary group tended to be higher than those of the control group. Furthermore, the 0.5% DPWE dietary group showed a higher survival rate than the control group against Listeria monocytogenes infection. Viable cell number of L.monocytogenes in the spleen and liver of this group was also significantly decreased compared with the control group.
